Abstract
In linear magnetohydrodynamic generators operating with a slag layer coating the electrode walls, highly nonuniform electrical characteristics are often observed. It is proposed that the voltage patterns in these channels are an example of chaos in a discrete spatial system. An idealized model is presented, based on the Hall effect and nonlinear resistance in the slag layer. The model, which correctly predicts observed features, exhibits complex chaotic behavior. Keywords
