Do Facial Eye-stripes Function in Avian Vision?

Abstract
Facial eye-stripes are a characteristic of certain birds and lower vertebrates. The authors suggest they use them as aiming sights in striking moving prey. In support of this, 141 North American songbirds of 22 families were examined for eye-stripes and grouped according to their feeding habits. There was a +.94 rank-difference correlation between presence of an eye-stripe and feeding on swiftly moving prey. Herons seem to sight along a line at an angle above the bill and by so doing may correct for refraction of underwater prey.
