Abstract
A noted Soviet climatologist and his colleagues compare various forecasts of temperature and precipitation change occurring during global warming (based on the past climatic record and climate—theory models) with weather data for the 1970s and 1980s. The validity of recent forecasts of global warming is critically examined in light of strengths and weaknesses of different forecasting methods (linear extrapolation, estimates of atmospheric gas content). The authors identify past climatic analogs to warming conditions expected for the years 2000, 2025, and 2050 and examine likely spatial patterns in accompanying temperature and moisture changes over the Northern Hemisphere (translated by Andrew R.
