Abstract
The Na-induced (3×1) reconstruction is investigated by core and valence level photoemission, as well as scanning tunneling microscopy. It is demonstrated that the conversion of the (7×7) into the (3×1) reconstruction involves a large amount of mass transport. The (3×1)-Na reconstruction is semiconducting. We observe a (7×7)/(3×1)-Na coexistence that can be interpreted as metal-semiconductor contact. The density of Na atoms in the (3×1) unit cell is determined to one atom per unit cell. Keywords
