Abstract
Hyper-Raman scattering is shown to be a useful spectroscopic method for studying odd-parity phonons in centrosymmetric crystals. We review recent results obtained for oxygen perovskites in their cubic paraelectric phase. Attention is focused on the soft modes which are Raman forbidden and difficult to observe by far-infrared reflection spectroscopy. We also include hyper-Raman spectra of alkali halides to illustrate principal features of hyper-Raman scattering. Keywords
