Abstract
The word "fatigue" is popular and too ill-defined for scientific purposes. "Inadequacy" is a term that can be exactly characterized. With this point of view the reviewer discusses the literature in his field under the following heads :(1) Studies pertaining directly to cell activities and dysfunction whether detected in the whole organism, or in part-preparations; (2) studies attributing fatigue to the failure of a tissue system, or calling a change in its function an example of fatigue; (3) studies of the intact organism in which energy-consuming performance is the main variable; (4) studies in which some non-energistically studied feature of performance is used as a variable, and in which fatigue is thought of as disorganization of function rather than energy lack; and (5) reviews or generalizations. Keywords
