Study on Anodic Deposition of Ferrous Ions on Gold by a Quartz Crystal Microbalance

Abstract
In situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique has been applied to investigate anodic deposition of ferrous ions on gold in solutions containing different electrolytes (perchlorate, phosphate, and borate) with relation to the formation of passive films on iron. The apparent molecular weight of deposited films was evaluated from comparison between in situQCM and coulometry and was found to depend strongly on the electrolyte composition. The electrolyte dependence on apparent molecular weight was attributed to anodic oxidation of ferrous complex ions which were formed by the reaction of ferrous ions and electrolyte anions.
