Abstract
The reliability of the currently used quantitative assay for commercially available chlorophyllin copper complex is discussed. It was shown that optical measurements at 405 nm can overestimate the purity of the preparation by 16.4–49.5%. This conclusion is from comparative studies using spectrophotometry at 405 nm and elemental analysis (copper content) of chlorophyllin copper complex. Spectrophotometry at 630 nm resulted in closer agreement with data calculated from elemental analysis. These observations have to be taken into consideration by those involved in the manufacture and distribution of chlorophyllin copper complex as well as in the development of the United States Pharmacopeia compendial monograph for this preparation. Keywords
