The Microcirculation of the Tracheal Mucosaa

Abstract
An extensive and characteristic microvasculature is demonstrated in the tracheal mucous membrane in the dog, rabbit, rat and guinea pig. It is characterized by long arterioles, an extensive capillary bed, short funnel-shaped venules and an arcade of ramifying interconnected veins. There are marked species specific differences in this vascular bed. The functional significance of this microvasculature is not apparent and has not been studied.
