Epithelial cytokines in intestinal inflammation and mucosal immunity

Abstract
Intestinal epithelial cells participate in intestinal homeostasis and mucosal immunity by secreting and responding to cytokines. Recent advances have increased our understanding of epithelial cell control over events in the intestine, possibly including the initiation of the inflammatory response through the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. This review examines the current literature regarding intestinal epithelial cell collaboration in the cytokine network during normal and diseased conditions.
