Abstract
Reinterpretation of crop tolerance data to salinity, chemical precipitation, and dissolution phenomena in soils and soil water flow principles leads to an irrigation water management concept that permits substantial reduction in the amount of salt discharged from irrigation projects. The use of frequent and uniformly applied irrigations, tailored to meet a low but sufficient leaching requirement, provides a means toward minimizing the adverse effects of irrigation on downstream water quality, while maintaining a viable irrigation agriculture. Keywords
