Abstract
This work determined what effect stiffness in the direction normal to the plane of contact between surfaces in sliding contact had on the phenomenon of stick-slip. The results showed that the amplitude if stick-slip vibrations could be reduced by increasing the normal stiffness with contacting surfaces of mild steel. It was also observed that with the above mentioned surfaces some wear had to take place before stick-slip would occur. This was attributed to the initial presence of oxide on the surfaces. Keywords
