Abstract
A "method of magnitude-estimation" for the study of S''s ability to specify, in quantitative terms, the ratio of a comparison to a standard loudness is described and illustrated. 2 general procedures were tested under a number of different conditions. In the first, a standard stimulus and several variable stimuli are presented. In the second, no standard is employed and "O merely assigns whatever numbers seem appropriate to describe the loudness of a (randomly presented) series of intensities." Both procedures yield results "consistent with a loudness-scale that is a power function of physical intensity: L = klO.3.".Keywords
