Effect upon Outcome of Nuances in Selection Criteria for ADHD/Hyperactivity

Abstract
To explore the effect of variations in selection criteria on sample size and empirical outcome, groups of ADHD/Hyperactive children were constituted according to various combinations of parents' and teachers' ratings. The “consensus” group was comprised of those children considered abnormal by both parent and teacher. The “and/or” group consisted of the consensus children as well as those rated by either the parent or teacher as abnormal. Two additional groups were formed according to the parent and teacher criteria considered separately. Sample sizes varied markedly among the groups. The effects of these sample differences are illustrated by the extent to which results of a validational study can vary depending on the nature of the selection criteria.
