Abstract
Innovation in cartography has come to depend on the design of software. This essay recounts two cycles of software development at the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics which used different models for intellectual control. In retrospect, each model had its successes, but in neither period were there enough new professionals trained to expand the field of digital cartography. Keywords
