Abstract
A method of drainage of the small intestine is described which avoids the dangers usually encountered, ie, leakage and adhesions which may be the source of future obstruction. A drain tube is inserted through the tenia coli and Bauhin's valve into the small intestine. The cecum is closed around the tube with circular, triple-layer sutures and is then sutured to the abdominal wall around the opening through which the tube passes outwards. The tube is removed by withdrawal and the opening in the cecum closes within a few days. Six patients with intestinal obstruction are described in whom the tube was used successfully.
