STUDIES ON THE UTERUS

Abstract
A chronic uteerine fistula is employed. Pituitrin and pitocin (oxytocin) are used in doses of 0.05-1.0 cc. The response to either drug depends upon the degree of spontaneous activity existing prior to the injection, being nil or slight in a quiescent uterus, while marked in an active uterus. A response obtained from an active uterus is characterized in the case of pituitrin by an initial tetanus, 3-5 min. duration, followed by a period of inactivity with a gradual return to normal or accelerated activity. With pitocin the initial tetanus is not followed by a period of inactivity, but immediately by accelerated activity. The duration of the response appears not to be associated with the amount of the drug intravenously injected. The difference in the response of the uterus to the usual posterior lobe preparation, pituitrin, and the same preparation freed of the pressor principle, pitocin, is believed to be a new observation.
