Effect of interleukin 1 on human thymocytes and purified human T cells.

Abstract
Human Interleukin 1 (IL-1) purified by MW fractionation, isoelectric focusing, and gel electrophoresis was tested on human thymocytes and highly purified human T cells. IL-1 prepared in this manner could not support long-term T cell growth yet would augment lectin[phytohemagglutinin]-stimulated mitogenesis. The IL-1 preparations possessed this lectin-augmenting activity at dilutions containing < 1 ng of measurable protein. These data agree with the model that IL-1 stimulates IL-2 production from lectin-stimulated lymphocytes.
