Enhancement studies of coastal cod in western Norway. Part I. Recruitment of wild and reared cod to a local spawning stock

Abstract
A stock-enhancement study of coastal cod was initiated in 1983, when 19002 juvenile cod reared from broodstock earlier in the year were tagged and released in the Austevoll region, western Norway. As part of this programme, 3003 of them were released on a local spawning ground. By sampling the local cod population at different times after release it was found that reared fish contributed 25% of the 1983 year class caught as juveniles in 1984, and 36% and 35% of the same year class caught on the spawning ground in respectively 1986 and 1987. No differences in recruitment patterns between wild (indigenous) and reared cod were detected. Studies of allele frequencies in four loci were conducted to compare the broodstock and offspring with the wild population. Two rare alleles found in the wild population were not present in the broodstock. No other genetic differences were detected, either between broodstock and offspring or during the period after release.
