Much ado about the "volunteer artifacts."

Abstract
Examined the arguments and evidence adduced to support the view that the volunteer status of Ss is a pervasive source of bias in social psychological research. It is concluded (a) that neither logical consideration nor the empirical data warrant much concern about the volunteer artifacts; and (b) that rather than invest resources in extensive research programs attempting to delineate the extent and the nature of volunteer biases, the interest therein might best be limited to those specific instances in which volunteer status may be expected to operationally embody a psychological variable pertinent to the given context of interest.
