Abstract
The leaf and stem pubescence which distinguishes Hebe allanii from H. amplexicaulis is shown to be a genetic polymorphism with hairy dominant to glabrous; consequently H. allanii is here treated as H. amplexicaulis forma hirta Garnock-Jones et Molloy. Within-population variation in several other characters is discordant and does not justify the recognition of other infraspecific taxa. Lowland populations in The Hunters Hills area and in the gorge of the Opihi River are morphologically distinguishable from H. amplexicaulis and are recognised as a new species, H. pareora Garnock-Jones et Molloy. The habitats of H. amplexicaulis and H. pareora are described and the conservation of both species in nature is discussed. Keywords
