Abstract
The history of the use of intra-abdominal pressure as an indirect measure of trunk stresses is reviewed. The limitations and advantages of the technique are considered, as are its applicability to laboratory and field studies. Its use in relation to epidemiology is described. The need for further observations on the frequency of force applications, and on the pressure responses of females is stressed. Keywords
