The Changing Demographic Determinants of the Growth of the Extreme Aged

Abstract
Persons 85 years and over, the extreme aged, have been proportionately the most rapidly growing segment of the aged population for some time. Since 1940 growth in excess of 50% has occurred each decade. Census data were used to investigate the relative effects of the different demographic factors underlying this growth. In contrast with earlier periods, declining mortality has been most responsible for the growth of this population since 1940.
