Hypotonic duodenography in chronic pancreatitis

Abstract
Hypotonic duodenography was performed on 40 patients with proven chronic pancreatitis. Duodenal atonia was achieved by Propanthilene administration after duodenal intubation and the procedure was free of major side effects. Abnormality of the duodenal contour and mucosa was present in 32 (80 per cent) of the patients. Conventional upper gastro-intestinal studies failed to reveal the minor changes found in duodenal outline but did demonstrate extrinsic pressure in four of the six patients later found to have such defects on duodenography. None of the abnormalities discussed is thought to be any way specific to pancreatitis, and hypctonic duodeno-graphy should not be used to differentiate pancreatic inflammation from neoplasia.
