The nomenclature of the North Atlantic species of Phyllophora Greville

Abstract
Critical examination of the literature and of specimens of North Atlantic species of Phyllophora Grev. confirmed that Phyllophora crispa (Huds.) Dixon, P. palmettoides J. Ag., and P. traillii Holm. ex Batt. are legitimate and should be retained. P. membranifolia (Good. et Woodw.) Endl. is an illegitimate name, however, and the correct citation for the taxon is shown to be P. pseudoceranoides (Gmelin) comb. nov.; similarly P. truncata (Pallas) comb. nov. is the correct binomial for the taxa known as P. interrupta (Grev.) J. Ag. (=P. brodiaei f. interrupta (Grev.) Rosenv.) and P. brodiaei (Turn.) Endl. which may be recognized as P. truncata (Pallas) comb. nov. f. truncata and P. truncata (Pallas) comb. nov. f. brodiaei (Turner) comb. nov.
