Abstract
The cross section for excitation of surface-plasmon modes on a spherical void in a metal by fast electrons is derived. The response of the metal to electromagnetic perturbations is described using an electron-gas model. Comparison of the probability for this process with that for volume-plasmon excitation indicates that such surface-plasmon excitation should be experimentally observable. Keywords
