Visibility Measurement Using Backscattered Light

Abstract
The suitability of backscattered light for the measurement of visibility is discussed on the basis of previous practical and theoretical investigations and of 2½ years' tests in routine meteorological work at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Berlin. Tests have demonstrated that backscatter devices indicate visibility equally as well as other types of visibility meters with an accuracy of about ±20%, provided that no completely abnormal distribution of aerosol particles occurs.
