Abstract
This paper argues for the importance of assisting students to be realistic judges of their own performance. Details of a case‐study are reported which investigated the self‐appraisal abilities of a group of engineering students and showed the majority to be satisfactorily competent. The implications are discussed, and less assessment for marks and more for diagnostic feedback are advocated. Keywords
