Abstract
Tabanus quinquevittatus Wiedemann was collected about horses on a farm near an extensive breeding area. Thirty-one animal-trap collections took 500 females (mean 16.1; range 1-59). The temporal distribution of this species based on catches from this trap was right- skewed, catches rising abruptly to a peak in mid-July and then declining sharply to small numbers in August and September. T. quinquevittatus entered barns and vehicles readily and fed primarily on the backs of animals. This horse fly probably inhabits farms both as an adult and as an immature. The identity of T. quinquevittatus, and related members of the T. nigrovittatus-quinquevittatus complex, is discussed to clarify the taxonomy of the group. Keywords
