An electron diffraction specimen chamber with a specimen vacuum lock

Abstract
The specimen chamber of a new electron diffraction camera is described. A novel feature is the inclusion of a cover which allows the vacuum to be maintained immediately around the specimen, when air is admitted to the camera. This allows various operations to be carried out on the camera, without the specimen being exposed to the atmosphere. In addition, it is possible for specimens, while enclosed by the vacuum cover, to be transferred to the camera from external apparatus. Successful applications of this vacuum lock are given.
