Abstract
The observations of Dr. Pildes, et al. concerning the elevated glucose and insulin levels in portal compared to peripheral venous blood following oral glucose administration appear to agree with our findings in adults. With the realization that the umbilical vein remains patent in the adult, we have utilized indwelling catheters stationed at the umbilicoportal vein junction to assess liver disease with hepatoportography and have been able to measure simultaneous portal and peripheral glucose and insulin changes with both oral and parenteral glucose administration.
