Abstract
In this essay for teachers, Winnicott discusses how doctors make diagnoses and asks: what is the equivalent in schools? Children with different emotional needs require different approaches from their schools. For the child from a stable home, the school is a place for learning and teaching. Other children need help managing moods and dealing with extremes of behaviour, and this requires careful relations between school and home and, ideally, work in small groups. A child who is anti-social and whose home has failed needs special management, and there are those who need school to provide what is lacking at home.
