Anomalous Diamagnetism of a Perovskite LaVO3

Abstract
We have found that a perovskite LaVO3 exhibits a cubic-to-orthorhombic transformation, immediately followed by a magnetic transition into a large diamagnetic state below about 135 K. Resistivity measurement revealed that the compound is a semiconductor in the whole temperature range investigated, with a slightly larger resistivity in the diamagnetic state. A small negative remanent moment was confirmed at low temperatures, and similarities and dissimilarities to other magnetic oxide systems are discussed.
