Abstract
Colin Mason and Steven Pinch are both lectures in geography and directors of the urbanpolicy research unit, university of Southpmton,england. Anglele storey is a research fellow in the urban policy research unit. this paper provides a case study of self-employement in an important british city. southampton. it has three main objectives first to present inforamtion on aspects of the self employed population that are not providedby the united kingodm General hoursefhold survey and Labour force survey, which are the main sources of inforatmion on the self - employed and the motivation of those entering self-employment and third, to identify the proportion of individuals classifed as self-employment who are 'quasi employees'.Keywords
