Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the perceived number of flashes was limited by the temporal characteristics of the retina. Human electroretinogram (erg.) records were obtained to find the relationship of retinal response to the objective number of flashes at several flash rates. The erg. results showed that the light-adapted retina reacted to each separate flash in a series of flashes, up to at least rates of 45/sec. It was concluded that the retina is not responsible for the temporal limitation of perceived number reported earlier, but that this phenomenon must be detd. by some higher process. Time values involved point to a possible connection with the alpha rhythm. Keywords
