Abstract
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the psychological aspects of motivation for volunteering in a youth agency (4-H) and to determine the perceptions these adult volunteers had regarding the characteristics of their volunteerism as a leisure activity. Two hundred adult 4-H volunteers were surveyed from a stratified random sample of counties in Minnesota. These volunteers were asked to respond to statements regarding why they volunteered and how their volunteering might be described. The results of the study indicated that adults were most motivated to volunteer by affiliation needs (the need for interaction with others). These volunteers also described their volunteering as being a leisure activity. Keywords
