THE EFFECT OF DIETARY FAT UPON GASTRIC EVACUATION IN NORMAL SUBJECTS

Abstract
Gastric emptying was studied by giving 100 ml. of BaSO4 suspension 4 hrs. after a mixed meal, making a 30-inch A.P. film, and measuring the area of the projected gastric shadow as an indication of vol. of the gastric contents. Thirty normal subjects were given 1500 calorie test meals containing various amts. of lard or hydrogenated vegetable oil. Significantly delayed gastric evacuation occurred when the fat content was increased from 53 gs. to 77 gs., and from 77 gs. to 120 gs. The type of dietary fat did not alter gastric evacuation at any level.
