Synthesis of fluorodienes

Abstract
In a comprehensive study of the cyclic, interintramolecular mechanism in diene polymerization, all of the completely fluorinated dienes from C5 to C8 have been prepared with a high degree of purity. Also prepared were 4-chloroperfluoro-1,6-heptadiene and perfluoro-1,11-dodecadiene, the latter inadvertently. The successful syntheses involved, in most cases, a telomerization which utilized, as the starting material. I2, ICl, CF2CFCl, or CF2CF2. From these telomers, not only the dienes but many new intermediate compounds were prepared; they were then purified and characterized. The chemistry of these compounds, especially that relating to their polymerization, is briefly discussed.
