Nesting of Birds in the Marshes of Northwest Iowa

Abstract
Nesting observations in the marshes of Clay and Palo Alto Counties for the spring of 1947 are reported. Spp. included are: pied-billed grebe* (Podilymbus podiceps podiceps), black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax n. hoactli), American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus), eastern least bittern (Ixobrychus e. exilis), marsh hawk (Circus hud-sonicus), Virginia rail (Rallus l. limicola), Florida gallinule* (Gallinula chloropus cachinnans), American coot (Fulica a. americana), Foster''s tern* (Sterna fosteri), black tern (Chlidonias nigra surinamensis), prairie marsh-wren (Tel-matodytes palustris dissaeptus), yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus), and red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus arctolegus). Emphasis is placed on nesting cover and a general discussion ot cover factors is given. Other nesting data pertain to clutch size, laying dates, hatching dates and nest densities.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
