Abstract
Numerical calculations have been done on the exciton spectrum of a schematic model of a linear polymer. The model consists of a random sequence of two kinds of subunit whose energy levels and transition moments are almost, but not quite, the same. The orders of magnitude of parameters are taken from DNA, but the full helical geometry has not been considered. Results are given for the density of energy levels, the dipole transition strength per unit energy, and the distribution of excitation energy along the polymer in individual states. A number of localized exciton states were found. Keywords
