Diamonds from the vapour phase

Abstract
When was the last time you looked through a 4 cm diameter diamond? A few years ago, a parcel from D Drukker BV, Amsterdam, to NASA, USA, containing a diamond window "only" 2 cm in diameter for the Voyager space craft needed special attention. The expensive piece, cut from a highly transparent type IIa natural stone, was accompanied by six policemen on motorbikes on its way to Schiphol airport... Drukker did not want to take risks. Today, the 4 cm diamond window (shown on the contents page) illustrates that an emerging technology – diamond deposition – has already come a long way. The industrial use of diamond is now no longer restricted to high-pressure synthesised abrasive powder and tools made from it.
