Abstract
After 4 days reaction time the ion activity product A1(OH)3 was significantly less than 10-33.0, when Al precipitated was less than 80 meq. per 100 g clay, and it was very close to 10-33.0 when the amount of Al precipitated was more than 100 meq per 100 g clay and the OH/A1 ratio greater than 1.60. The precipitation of 400 to 1200 meq. of Al at OH/A1 ratio 2.20 and SO4 concentration 10 m mole/1, reduced the exchange capacity by 6 to 11 meq per 100 g of Wyoming bentonite. Over prolonged periods, the interlayer material disappeared and the crystalline phase of basic aluminum sulfate was formed. The ion product Al(OH)3 was 10-33.6 [plus or minus] 0.1 when the crystalline phase formed and there was no inactivation of exchange capacity.
