Abstract
Extract Johne's disease in sheep was first described by Stockman ( 1911 Stockman, S. 1911. J.comp.Path., 24: 66–69. [Google Scholar] ) in Great Britain, so it has long been recognized as a distinct clinical entity in that animal. However, it would seem that the disease in sheep has never assumed a very important role and has not been responsible for the economic losses attributable to the same disease in cattle. The disease has also been described in sheep in Germany by Lang and Berge as early as 1915. The first account of Johne's disease in sheep in the United States is given by Howarth( 1932 Howarth, J. A. 1932. J.Amer.vet.med.Ass., 81: 383–387. [Google Scholar] ), and the same author ( 1937 Howarth, J. A. 1937. Cornell Vet., 27: 223–234. [Google Scholar] ) came to the conclusion that the disease was apparently clinically and pathologically identical with the disease in cattle. There were some differences in that the organism from sheep was more difficult to cultivate and that the mucosa did not always show the corrugation and irregular folds so characteristic of the disease in cattle. Keywords
