Abstract
On many farms near the coast in Iceland the ewes graze on seaweeds during the winter. Some of these ewes give birth to lambs which show incoordination of movement, and are often unable to stand. Pathologically the disease is characterized by demyelination confined to the cerebrum. Although the Cu content of the ewes feed in these areas does not seem to be low, the ewes show low values for blood Cu. The Cu content of livers from affected lambs is much lower than the avg. Cu content of livers from lambs from non-affected areas. A field expt. showed that the disorder can be largely prevented by giving a supplement of CUSO4 to the ewes during pregnancy. Keywords
