Attractiveness of Certain Plant Constituents to the Japanese Beetle1

Abstract
Of 52 chemicals tested, at least 30 were to some degree attractive. These attractants were found among the alcohols, acids, oils, esters, and aldehydes, as well as other chemicals. Mixtures of these attractants were on a whole more attractive than any component. In. 19 combinations, 15 exceeded the value of any one constituent when used alone. In 5 cases the combinations were more attractive than the combined value of all of the attractants in the mixture. In 4 cases the attractive values were less than for a single constituent. Some attractants could be diluted with apparently non-attractive substances without materially impairing attractive values.
