Abstract
Lymphocytes from cancer patients and normal donors were cultured and stimulated by phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Patients with generalized disease reacted less to the stimulation than did those with localized disease. Patients in similar clinical stages but with dissimilar prognoses responded differently. Those with poor prognoses showed a depression of the immune reactivity as compared to those with good prognoses. Patients receiving radiotherapy or chemotherapy prophylactically or therapeutically were examined before and after treatment. In most cases, the lymphocytes reacted less after the treatment. The use of immunotherapy in patients with depression of the immune mechanism has been discussed. Keywords
