Serial position and the von Restorff isolation effect.

Abstract
THE VON RESTORFF ISOLATION EFFECT WAS STUDIED IN SERIAL LEARNING WHERE THE ORDINAL POSITION OF THE ISOLATED ITEM WAS MANIPULATED. 60 COLLEGE STUDENTS WERE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS AND LEARNED A 10-ITEM LIST WITH PERCEPTUAL ISOLATION OF EITHER ITEMS 1, 6, OR 10. CONTROLS LEARNED AN IDENTICAL LIST EXCEPT THAT NO ITEMS WERE ISOLATED. RESULTS INDICATE THAT GREATER FACILITATION OCCURRED UNDER THE 6TH-ISOLATION TREATMENT WHEN THE DATA WERE EVALUATED IN TERMS OF THE ABSOLUTE DEGREE OF FACILITATION AT EACH SERIAL POSITION. HOWEVER, WHEN THE DATA WERE ANALYZED IN TERMS OF PERCENTAGE FACILITATION, IT WAS FOUND THAT EQUAL AMOUNTS OF FACILITATION OCCURRED FOR EACH ISOLATION TREATMENT. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE APPARENT DIFFERENTIAL FACILITATION OBSERVED WHEN ABSOLUTE MEASURES WERE USED, WAS ATTRIBUTABLE, IN LARGE PART, TO CEILING EFFECTS DUE TO THE VERY RAPID LEARNING OF BEGINNING AND END ITEMS.
