Carcinogenic nitrogen compounds. Part LI. Dealkylation of N-alkylcarbazoles; synthetic applications

Abstract
N-Alkylcarbazoles and several of their substitution derivatives are shown to undergo smooth dealkylation by heating with sulphur. This reaction provides a new route to many 3-substituted carbazoles, and can be applied to the synthesis of condensed polycyclic carbazoles such as the hitherto unknown 6H-dibenzo[b,h] carbazole, and 5H-benzo[b] carbazole.
