Abstract
The effects were investigated of three container sizes in factorial combination with two peat sources (Irish and New Zealand) on the growth and yield of glasshouse tomatoes stopped at the sixth truss. The dry weight of plant top and total fruit yield increased as container size increased. The increase in total fruit yield was due to increased fruit yields in later trusses, with increases in fruit number rather than mean fruit weight. A lack of continuous water and nutrient supply was considered the factor limiting plant performance in the smaller containers. The Irish peat produced a higher dry weight of plant top than the New Zealand peat, but there were no differences in total fruit yield between the two peat sources. Keywords
