Abstract
When measured by simple calorimetric methods, microwave ovens seem to supply more power to water loads than 1% saline loads. Careful energy flow analysis and heating pattern measurement reveals that the addition of salt greatly enhances the electromagnetic heating of the edge of the load which increases the evaporative loss from the load. The microwave power delivered to the load is the same in both cases. Keywords
